This is a great post on a trip to Maryland! I’ll have to add Great Falls Park, MD to my list of places to visit.
Just 2.5 hours from Philly and only 40 minutes west of Washington, D.C. is a beautiful area with great hiking!
If you’re not into hiking, Great Falls is still worth the trip. There are overlooks with impressive views of the waterfalls on the Potomac River, a beautiful walking trail along the canal, a historic visitor center, and peaceful picnic areas.
We hiked the Billy Goat Trail, section A. This trail wasn’t too strenuous, but required some fun (and tricky) scrambling. We saw plenty of children during the hike, so it’s definitely family-friendly as long as you and your children are prepared to climb over large rocks. You’ll face a 50-foot rock wall halfway through the hike (but there is the opportunity to exit the trail and continue on the canal path if that’s not your thing).
